Book Review - Leaves on Frozen Ground
Leaves on Frozen Ground is the debut novel by Dave Carty. This is a simple story about family, love, marriage, hardship, and LIFE. I was offered this story to read and review. The title certainly would not be one that would prompt me to pick up the book to read. However, the summary on the back of the book did sound like a story I would enjoy. As a whole, it was an easy read, and an honest story about life that I'm sure many couples can relate to.

Summary:
Leaves on Frozen Ground is, at the core a story about how LIFE can interrupt and derail the best of relationships.
Before tragedy struck the Villancourt's life, their marriage was at best, strained. They did not discuss how their relationship was slowing slipping away, but it was evident by the change in the way they related to one another.
Difference in opinion - about business - which affected their livelihood - about how to raise their son, about some of the mundane things in life - slowly began putting a rift in their relationship. A relationship that once seemed so solid, and easy.
It's not unusual for couples to find themselves in a rut. It was during this time in their marriage that the worst tragedy imaginable struck their family.
TRAGEDY CAN RUIN THE BEST OF MARRIAGES
During a time when this family was barely making ends meet, they suffered a devastating loss. And as it happens with many families after such despair, the Villaincourts realized they could not continue in their marriage. They would lose everything - their life together, their home, their family.
This story may touch home with many who read it. The struggle to keep a marriage happy and thriving, especially during the worst of times is not uncommon. The strength and determination of the 2 people in the relationship will determine the fate of the marriage. The Villaincourts, unfortunately, had lost all emotional strength and commitment to keep their marriage going.
REVIEW:
This is a story with a simple plot. You'll get to know the Villancourts - Gaston, Celine and their son Edmund as well as their 2 dogs, Cloud and Breeze. It's very easy to read and follow. Mr. Carty did a great job with his descriptions of the Villaincourt home site as well as the town they lived in near Lake Superior. His description of the characters also provided a glimpse into the family and it was easy to feel as though you began to know them.
This is a tear-jerker towards the end of the story. It's not written as a fairy tale, however, you do root for Celine and Gaston as they must navigate through their new course in life. It's hard not to wish this couple, who evidently was once very happy together, could find a way to work things out. Although, it's also easy to understand how impossible it might be to continue as though nothing had changed.
Let me know if you've read this story and what you thought about it. Also, share with me any recommendations for books I've "GOT TO" read.
Until my next review...
