Nassau, Bahamas
Nassau, Bahamas, summer vacation. In 2014 I took my son to the Bahamas. He was 10 that year. My husband is not comfortable flying and truth be told, he doesn’t have the desire to travel as I do.
My daughter who had been my travel buddy for the previous 10 years was graduating college and planning for a wedding, so it was time to break my son in on “traveling with mom”. This would be his first flight – he was very excited.
This would also be Alex's first trip out of the USA, so I had to get his passport. To make it feel special for him, I got him his own passport wallet.
Our flight to the Bahamas was from Miami. We live in Naples Florida, just West of Miami on the other coast so it was a quick 2-hour drive. I decided to drive into Miami the night before our flight and stay in the hotel inside the airport. I don't like to rush. It was nice to be right where we needed to be in the morning before our flight.
They say to be at the airport at least 2 hours ahead of your flight, especially for international flights, so I didn’t want to run into any problems getting there on time with a 10:00 flight. I was very happy to realize there was a hotel AT the airport. What an ingenious concept.
We got to our gate plenty early the morning of our flight and had no wait at all, so we sat at our gate for about 1 ½ hour waiting to board. To say Alex was anxious was an understatement. Once we got on the plane he was in awe.
Typical of most kids, I imagine, he wanted the window seat and chooses the window seat every time we fly. It was at that moment that I realized I’d just forfeited the window seat from then on.
It was an easy 45-minute flight into Nassau Bahamas. We got to the airport and hired a shuttle bus to take us to the hotel. We were staying at Atlantis. A couple of years earlier I had seen the water park. I had taken my daughter on a cruise for her 21st birthday to the Bahamas.
We spent a day touring Atlantis and saw that the water park was to die for. It is part of the resort. Using the water park wasn't part of our tour. As soon as I saw it though, I knew that one day I would take Alex. I was so excited to see his reaction when we arrived at the resort.
Once we arrived at our hotel, we left our luggage at the front desk baggage holding area and began exploring the resort. Atlantis is a huge resort with so much to do! There is the water park, shopping, a huge aquarium that is an included amenity if staying at the resort. There is an abundance of eating options, as well as the casino for the adults!
We stayed at the Coral Towers at the Atlantis Resort and Casinos. It is one of several different “Towers” that offer rooms/suites at Atlantis. Coral Tower was very nice and was close to the water park. We were at the water park every day! In addition to the water park, our suite was near plenty of restaurants. Even in my 40's, I had a great time playing at the water park!
Atlantis in Nassau Bahamas is a great place for kids AND adults!
One day we went to Dolphin Cay to “play” with the dolphins. That was really exciting. I see dolphins on a regular basis in Naples where I live. To be in the water with them and be able to touch them was so much more than seeing them from a boat. Alex loved it.
Nassau Bahamas, Summer Vacation
The resort was spacious but everything was within walking distance. We were adventurous, we ate good food and we had a great time together, building memories. That was the first of many trips Alex and I would take by plane and I knew then that I had a new travel buddy!
