Book Review - The Lake House
The Lake House - Kate Morton. Following a fellow reader on Instagram, I chose this book as a recommendation. I'd never read anything by Kate Morton, but my Insta pal gave rave reviews. Since I was ready for a new read after I was done reading The Alice Network, I began this book. It's not a quick read. Rather, it's a long story; nearly 500 pages.

Summary
The Lake House is such a great read. Covering several key characters, spanning 7 decades and 2 families, once I became invested in the characters I couldn't put this book down.
The author is from Europe and the story takes place in England. Being from the US it takes a little time to get used to the slightly different dialect. Kate Morton does such a wonderful job with describing EVERYTHING, the characters, the scene and scenery as well as the emotions that it's easy to feel as if you're a witness to the story that unfolds.
The Lake House takes the reader on a journey to solve 2 unsolved mysteries; one that took place in 1933 and the other in 2003. Get to know Detective Sadie and author Alice as they eventually come together to solve the Cold case from 1933.
Meet Detective Sadie
After Sadie is forced to take a leave from her job as a detective, she goes to stay with her grandfather. She made a questionable decision while working a case of a mother who, it appears, has run away from her life, leaving her toddler daughter home alone.
Sadie's grandparents raised her since she was a teenager after a falling out with her parents. After learning she was pregnant, they told her she couldn't remain at home. While trying to unwind at her grandfather's home, she takes up running to clear her head.
Sadie comes up on an abandoned estate. Something drew her to this beautiful home, so she got closer. The detective in her prompted her to nose around and decide to learn more about the history.
She heads to the local library to gather information. Befriending one of the librarians, Sadie learns that approximately 70 years earlier, a young boy was taken from his crib. The toddler was never seen again.
Meet Alice - the older sister of the boy who was "kidnapped". Alice lives her entire life, believing she contributed to the loss of her brother.
The detective blood running through Sadie did not allow her to ignore the mystery surrounding this incident. Eventually, she meets Alice; esteemed mystery author, Alice Edevane and together they solve the mystery that affected how Alice lived her entire life.
Review
There are many twists and overlaps in this story. It takes a little while to invest in the characters due to the time involved in building them. But, once you're envisioning the Lake House during the Summer Celebration as well as the condition it's in when Sadie comes upon it, you're hooked. And, Kate does a wonderful job of bringing everything together in the end. I would definitely recommend this story to mystery lovers and cannot wait to read another book by Kate Morton.
